New Year in the Falklands
This is the Upland Goose Hotel and pub, well known local landmark. On the green in front of the hotel is a mast from the SS Great Britain which was abandoned in the Falklands for many years before being brought back to Bristol to be restored.
This is Whale Bone Arch next to the Cathedral over looking the harbour. This is where we had our carol concert in the bright, warm sunshine on
Christmas Eve.
King penguins swimming in the sea off Volunteer Point.
Volunteer Point is only about 40 miles from Stanley but it takes over 2 hours to drive their, mostly off-road across very peaty ground. It is very east to get stuck in the boggy ground on the way out there, and you really need a local person to drive you out there.
King penguin colony at Volunteer Point. This time of year the eggs have just been laid and the female penguins stay in the colony to guard the eggs. You can just about see the eggs in the photograph.
It is a long drive out there, but well worth it. There are 3 species of penguins all in the same area.
If you stay still long enough the penguins will come up very close, they can be very inquisitive at times. The penguins live quite happily alongside the sheep that graze in the same area.
Two new guests to the hospital house. Without any notice we got two more guests in our house. They are doing a good job of eating all the grass in the front and back gardens. In a couple of days they will be moved on to another house whose lawn needs cutting. They seem to be quite friendly, and have also provided some manure for the garden.
